In 1 Samuel 25, it speaks of a woman named Abigail. She was one of good understanding and of a beautiful countenance. Abigail was married to a man named Nabal, who was churlish (rude, sullen, rough in temper, selfish, unyielding, unmanageable, obstinate) and very evil in his doings. Yet, through it all, she did not allow his untoward ways to overcome her. She was one who loved God and respected David, the man of God; although her husband had railed on him. When David and his men were coming to destroy Nabal, one of the servants told Abigail and she brought two hundred loaves, two bottles of wine, five sheep ready dressed, five measures of parched corn, a hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs to David and his men. She not only brought all this, but she fell on her face at David’s feet and prayed for mercy. Because she did this, David’s wrath was extinguished. Abigail had returned unto Nabal to find him feasting and being merry with drunkenness. Abigail was in the house of mourning while Nabal was in the house of feasting (Ec 7:2). The next morning was the end of Nabal, his heart turned to stone when he heard of all that was done. Abigail never stopped praying, despite all that she had been through. Even though Nabal was an evil and wicked man, she always put prayer and worshipping God first. As we look and study the life of Abigail, we need to remember to put prayer first before any decisions we make, or anything we do, just like she did.
